Keeper

Limited series of reliquary paintings developed during my Artist Occupancy at Backfence Society in Vista, CA, 6/6/23 to 7/15/23.

Sourcing original photographs from the Oceanside Historical Society's archives and incorporating original reclaimed materials from Oceanside, California, this experimental, processed-based residency continues my creative research into psychometry, catastrophic change, memory and psychogeography.

As spaces disappear in the region due to economic development, my new body of work hopes to expand on previous themes of place and home, while experimenting with the meaning materials hold as they are transformed. Through the lens of my Catholic upbringing, I explore what memorial, relic, and reverence mean in a post-contemporary world. And in this work I continue a fading tradition of telling and retelling visual histories, claiming my role as a "keeper" of memory in my community by preserving the forgotten.
